Donation in Amman, Jordan

While I was in Amman, Jordan in the Middle East in January I was delighted to tour the facilities at a home for children run by the St Vincent de Paul Society in Amman.

Our tour was organized through Rotarian Souheil Kalis who along with the nuns that ran the children’s home were extremely generous with their time in showing us through this great facility.

The website for the home is: www.vincentpaul-jordan.org and they rely largely on donations (of books, computers, etc) to keep up the great work they do in the community primary housing young women and assisting in ensuring they continue on in primary, high school and often through to tertiary education.

In visiting the facility (even though they only house children from 3 years onwards) we were able to leave Baby Teresa outfits with then nuns for continued distribution in the community into the families they assist.

The photos you'll see here are of the facility, my hosts at the home and also of Amman city center and a lovely area on the way to Jerash in Jordan.

January, 2010 - Donation in Egypt

In January, 2010 on my first trip to Egypt I got to tick of lots of firsts. First time in a pyramid (the Luxor hotel in Vegas doesn’t count!), first time riding a camel, first time eating fateer (delicious yummy Egyptian pancakes).

It was also my first chance to do an on-site Baby Teresa baby outfit donation where I met the women and mothers that our suits would be going to.

The donation took place in a Nubian village on the west bank of the Nile near Aswan. We spent the evening in this village eating a sumptuous home cooked meal.

After dinner my tour leader Hisham was kind enough to introduce me to the main “Mum” of this village and she had organized for me to meet one lady who was 7 months pregnant and another who had a little child only months old. When I handed over the suits all I can remember hearing in the darkness was their cries of “Thank you Kristy” over and over again (Kirsty’s a hard name to say with an Egyptian accent!). I’m not sure I’ve ever been thanked as loudly and as enthusiastically as I was that night and my hand was held over and over again by each of the woman.

It was a really beautiful experience and one that I’ll always treasure. To follow are some photos of the village where the donation took place the Mum’s and some of the local kids.

While this is the third donation I’ve been part of (Egypt, Jordan and Australia) this was the first one I got to do with people in person and it was amazing. Then upon arriving home and reading my emails I read that Susan Thomas (Uganda) and Aaron Jones (Kenya & Tanzania) were going through the same experience! Looking forward to sharing with you their photos and stories soon as well as my experience in Jordan.

Loving being part of Baby Teresa – where for each baby outfit we sell, we also donate another to a baby in need!

Xx Kirsty

To follow are the Nubian women I met who welcomed me so enthusiastically!

And a shot of the village, the camels we rode in on, our dinner (yum) and me playing a little Nubian dress up and having a blast!
